At AWDS we are dedicated to creating the finest contemporary furniture
and architectural joinery with a distinctive Australasian character.
As well as in-house design, we also collaborate with leading architects
and designers to produce classic modern designs that counter balance
clean, elegant forms with sumptuous Australian cabinet timbers.
Mark Halford, who completed post graduate
industrial design studies at the Polytechnic of Design in Milan and
who has worked on many notable commissions for both the public sector
and private sector luminaries, is a regular contributor of design expertise.
Australia's heritage of fine cabinet timbers such as Silver Ash, Blackwood,
Jarrah, Rosewood, Silky Oak and Cedar, has been severely depleted due
to past thoughtless and destructive practices.
We are committed to the sustainable use of this rare and valuable resource,
a resource which we feel has been under-valued and often unappreciated
in this country, though not necessarily overseas, where demand far exceeds
supply. We believe this heritage should be showcased in Australia for
us all to appreciate and be proud of.
In our solid timber pieces we use salvaged timbers where possible.
We use design and construction techniques that ensure our pieces will
withstand the test of time. We are conscious that timber is a resource
that takes many years to grow so we feel that the pieces we make need
to live longer than it takes to grow the timber resources to maturity.
That is the true objective of sustainable use of resource.
AWDS follows the tradition of fine furniture construction by using
decorative, exotic timber veneers. AWDS lays these fine timber veneers
over a solid substrate of plantation grown timbers to maximise the use
of these rare resources.
